In this course students will be introduced to and learn to apply a wide range of key conceptual and practical skills enabling them to develop visual art and design studio work in a range of disciplines from drawing, digital imaging and graphics, painting, digital and print design, sculpture and studio methods and techniques. The course aims to give students a broad range of experience within visual art and design. To assist them to find and determine their ultimate career direction and the most appropriate discipline to study. To help them develop an extensive and competitive folio of varied art work specifically for university and college entrance interviews. Through small group classes and ongoing tutorial advice gain intensive individual nurturing and help to develop ideas and direction. Experience using the college gallery for special projects and for displaying work in group exhibitions. The folio artwork created in this course will enable people to be extremely competitive at tertiary interviews for all Visual Art and Design university courses.

With the speed that technology evolves designers who wish to be at the cutting edge must be ready to embrace new mediums as they are presented. The Advanced Certificate of Digital Media at Latrobe College is an innovative course that will give students the tools necessary to design for a range of mediums combining computer generated 2D and 3D images and video footage to create multi layered imagery for screen and internet. The course provides students with the opportunity to learn and develop their skills in interactive design, web design, image manipulation, interface design, 3D modelling, animation and digital video production. Software taught will include Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Final Cut Pro, Sound Edit. On completion, students will have developed a level of proficiency with industry standard software products in key areas found in today’s multimedia and web design environment. This course leads to potential careers as animators, 3D visualisers and modelers, web designers, interface designers, producers, art directors, video producers, sound designers, game designers and digital artists.

The Advanced Certificate enables students to develop contemporary creative and technical design skills and gain a thorough knowledge of industry requirements in the graphic design field. Students will learn a range of up-to-date graphic design programs, develop and refine creative and technical design skills and produce a graphic design folio and web site for industry design job interviews or for future freelance clients. Students will learn and comprehensively cover the Adobe CS software programs of Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and InDesign. They will also learn the Macromedia web development programs of Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash. Graduates of this program are qualified to obtain, at a minimum, entry-level employment as graphic designers, web designers, computer graphic artists and production artists.

This course will open up opportunities for individuals, intent on working in the graphics and multimedia industry. The course is contemporary, innovative and provides a balance in skills based education with applied creative direction. It will provide students with the opportunity not only to develop their skills in typography, print and editorial design, branding and identity, information design, packaging, software usage, web design, image manipulation, interface design, interactive animation and digital video production but to set the benchmark for innovation and creative difference. The College is committed to providing industry with a diverse resource of talented individuals whose passion and commitment to design equals that of their practical and management skills. The program culminates with the development of a professional quality design portfolio with both digital and paper based components. Potential Careers include Graphic Designer, Typographic Designer, Print Designer, Package Designer, Publication Designer, Branding and Identity Designer, Corporate Communications Designer, Environmental and Retail Designer, In House Graphic Designer, Communications Director and Music Industry/Entertainment Designer. The deadline for course applications is one month before courses start. Applications will be accepted after those dates if there are still places available. Interviews are not compulsory but recommended for those still to determine their area of interest. Apply directly to the college, not through VTAC.
No experience is necessary. Participants are generally from a wide range of age groups and backgrounds.
