STUDIO PAINTING METHODS & TECHNIQUES

Studio Painting Methods & Techniques is a comprehensive program in teaching techniques, methods and theoretical aspects of painting. A strong emphasis will be placed upon the nature of observation and the way it is used and registered in painting & drawing. The course will draw upon a wide range of historical and contemporary sources helping students to develop a critical awareness of their skill development and technical proficiency. The subject will include practical painting methods & techniques essential to the handling of oil and paints. Students will be introduced to characteristics of and use of opaque and transparent pigments, painting mediums, glazing, colour mixing and colour selection, uses and types of brushes, preparation of painting surfaces (canvas, stretchers and alternative material), various approaches to paint application, including blending, glazing, scumbling, wet in wet, encaustic (wax), impasto and more.

DRAWING & MIXED MEDIA

Drawing & Mixed Media concentrates on teaching fundamental methods and alternative approaches in drawing. The aim is to help students develop skills, increase vocabulary of drawing approaches and give them guidance in harnessing and extending their own individual tendencies. Students will work from life models and elements both within the studio and outside and will explore different wet and dry media, including biro, charcoal, graphite, chalk pastel, ink, collage, paint, photography and more.

STUDIO ART

Studio Art is a practical and theoretical program for beginning and intermediate students in contemporary art practice that centres around painting but also includes students to who wish to work in other media such as drawing, sculpture, mixed media and installation. Students will be introduced and encouraged to explore a wide range of styles and practices but at the same time receive advice and support to identify, foster and become critically aware of their own interests and ideas. There will be an emphasis on building and developing ideas in conjunction with the practical methods and techniques. This subject may involve exhibition projects at various times of the year. This subject is suitable for those who like to experiment with painting or mixed media and is also a major subject for students undertaking Folio Preparation.

SCULPTURE & INSTALLATION

Students will learn to develop fundamental methods and techniques in sculpture, including modelling in clay and plaster. Ways to use materials and traditional and alternative ideas about form, scale, shape, rhythm and dynamic will also be explored. Additionally, students will learn about established sculptors and new directions in sculpture today. Confident students will be able to extend their ideas using found materials and other media. Students own individual approach and pre-existing ideas will be encouraged and supported. The course is suitable for beginners and upwards and those preparing folio work.

STUDIO PRACTICE

This is an intermediate to advanced subject that follows on from Studio Art I & II. The subject aims to increase students awareness of their own ideas and developments within their work. Attention will be paid to the students methods and materials and the relationship to their ideas whether it is painting, sculpture, digital art, drawing, or other. The relationship of the student’s practice to contemporary and local art will also be explored with discussions, critiques and gallery visits. The subject aims to equip students with skills enabling them to cultivate new ideas and generate new directions within the established forms of their work, with the point of increasing the dimension of their burgeoning art practice.

ADVANCED PAINTING METHODS & TECHNIQUES

Comprehensive program in teaching techniques, methods and theoretical aspects of observational painting for developed students and artists. Work from the figure will be conducted in this subject. Students individual interests and ambitions will be embraced within more developed technical painting projects.

DRAWING AND IDEAS

This is an intermediate to advanced subject that aims to develop skills, strategies and ideas through general and conceptual drawing. Students will be taught how to translate such investigation and research into a developed concepts and visual language. Students will also participate in group critiques and discussions on contemporary drawing practice.

ART HISTORY & THEORY:

TWENTIETH CENTURY MODERNISM - Impressionism to Conceptual Art
This unit introduces the major movements that establish the foundation of modernism in art practice. Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and the subsequent varieties of strategies that culminate in Conceptual Art of the 1970s.

CONTEMPORARY ART NOW - Neo Expression to Current Tendencies
This unit investigates the revival of painting in the 1980s and the pluralism of approaches to art practice that characterize the contemporary scene. Emphasis is placed upon the variety of approaches dominating the current discourse on visual art, such as deconstruction, post-colonialism, gender & global issues

GALLERIES & EXHIBITING PRACTICE / UNDERSTANDING THE ARTWORLD

This subject introduces students to the professional practice of the artist in the art world. It will look at different types of contemporary and traditional commercial, public and artist run galleries within Melbourne (examining them within context of other galleries in Australia and overseas). The subject will help individual students locate where their work or approach might be best suited in the artworld. It will help them develop career strategies, how to approach galleries, gallery representation, writing exhibition proposals and artist statements, prizes and awards, developing CV’s, photographing and digitally documenting work. The program will also include regular gallery visits and talks by gallery directors and critics.

Please be aware that subjects and courses at LaTrobe College are popular and will fill quickly. The deadline for Course Applications is one month before classes/courses start. Applications will be accepted after those dates if there are still places available. Interviews are not compulsory but recommended for those still to determine their area of interest. Apply directly to the college, not through VTAC.
